BRIEF BIOGRAPHY

Described in the New York Times as ‘the greatest living composer directly inspired by

the natural world’, and in BBC Arts Magazine as ‘the David Attenborough of the Arts’

Edward Cowie has certainly earned the accolade (from Tempo Magazine), ‘one of the

very few world figures that truly deserves the expression polymath’. His music is

performed all over the world by orchestras, ensembles and soloists of international

standing. He has won international prizes as both composer and performer. He is

exclusively published by United Music Publishing (UMP) and is also on exclusive

recording contract with the prestigious USA label, Metier Records. (Many of his CDs

feature paintings by his Australian visual artist wife, Heather Cowie). But he is also

world-renowned as a visual artist, having had more than 40 major exhibitions of his

work in 16 countries worldwide, including the Royal Academy in London. In Australia,

he has been represented by Coventry Gallery; Greenhill Gallery; Kensington Gallery

and The Glass Factory. His paintings and drawings are in both public and private

collections also worldwide. His work for television saw him earn a Prix Italia in 1986

for his BBCTV2 film on Leonardo. Originally trained as a physicist (he holds doctorates

in both theoretical physics and music), he also studies painting as a visiting artist at

The Slade in London. He has held several prestigious University Professorships in the

UK, the USA, Germany and Australia). Now, busier than ever and with an ever-

mounting respect and admiration from the world of arts and ideas, Edward and

Heather returned to Australia to live permanently after 30 years away in the UK and

Europe. They now live in Armidale, NSW, from where Edward writes, ‘’Australia has

been my spiritual and sensory home ever since I first visited it in 1981 and after which
