A Study in Stillness - Ryley Ryan

Graphite Pencil on Paper

This artwork explores the relationship between form, line and tone through a carefully observed arrangement of fruit and a vase. Working from direct observation, I focused on accurately representing the structure and proportions of each object. Using only black and white lead pencil, I created depth through varied pressure, strong directional lines and tonal contrast. The heavier marks emphasise areas of shadow and give the objects greater weight, while finer lines suggest changes in light and surface. The simplicity of the arrangement allowed me to concentrate on careful observation and the expressive possibilities of line and tone.
