The wide open spaces surrounding my studio afford space for thought and clarity essential to my work. Through exploring visual memory, I create semi abstract interpretations of the landscape. I am especially drawn to painting rural and outback surroundings, and channel my love for the country into my art. My process begins with observation and immersion in the landscape. This usually involves walking in the landscape for quite some time followed by smaller scale sketching. By doing this I am learning the lay of the landscape. As I simplify the compositions back in the studio, I allow memory and intuition to take over. The mark making becomes gestural and free. Working largely allows my work to remain free and capture that same feeling from the landscape for the viewer. I enjoy layering the pencils, paint and oil pastels to create depth and interest in the work. Colour is important in my practice and I use it to represent the richness of the Australian landscape.
